Description
JACK FREULICHJEAN HARLOWfromTHE IRON MAN (c. 1931)   gelatin silver print8" x 10" semi-glossstamped to verso*:Photo by FreulichUniversal Pictures Corp.conditioncondition of photograph is generally excellent, noting very subtle signs of light handling, slight creasing to top and bottomright corners,  and a small indentation in area of the crook of the left arm; a narrrow strip of paper has been mounted toverso, on which a hand written note alludes to The Iron Man~ JACK FREULICH Jack Feulich had emigrated from Europe with his family in the early 1920's.He became head of the newly formed stills department at Universal, andas that studio's portrait photographer, he photographed all of that studio'ssilent-screen stars, including Mary Philbin, Pricilla Dean, Erich von Stroheim, and Laura La Plante, and early sound stars like Bette Davis. Unlike most other Hollywood studios in the 1930s that competed for audiences with sophisticated dramas and comedies, Universal became known for horror films. This apparent lack of interest in cultivating brand name stars meant that although Freulich was a skillful and elegant photographer, he rarely had the chance to photograph the great faces such as those found at MGM and Paramount. This auction's photograph is a bonafide exception.  Jack Freulich was replaced as head of the gallery by his former still man, Ray Jones, after Carl Laemmle sold his interest in Universal in 1935. Most saw this as part of a thinly veiled effort to remove from the studio many of the European Jewish émigrés relating to Leammmle's tenure and replacing them with gentiles. Freulich committed suicide shortly thereafter in 1936. JEAN HARLOW Hollywood's original "blond bombshell" who all others  were measured against, Harlean Carpenter, who later became Jean Harlow, was born in Kansas City,Missouri, on March 3, 1911. She eloped at age 16 and ended up in Los Angeleswhere she found work as an extra and bit player, including Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy shorts. Her first big break came in 1930, when she landed a role inHoward Hughes' World War I epic Hell's Angels (1930), which turned out to be asmash hit. Not long after the film's debut, Hughes sold her contract to MGM for$60,000, and it was there where her career shot to unprecedented heights. Her appearance in Platinum Blonde (1931) cemented her role as America's  new sex symbol. The next year saw her paired with Clark Gable in John Ford's Red Dust (1932), the second of six films she would make with Gable.  The film was released late in 1932 and was an instant hit. She was becoming a superstar. In MGM's glittering all-star Dinner at Eight (1933) Jean was at her comedic best as the wife of a ruthless tycoon (Wallace Beery). Later that year she played the part ofLola Burns in director Victor Fleming's hit Bombshell (1933).  In 1933 Jean marriedcinematographer Harold Rosson, a union that would only last eight months. In 1935 she was again teamed with Gable in another rugged adventure China Seas (1935)(her remaining two pictures with Gable would be Wife vs. Secretary (1936) and Saratoga (1937)). It was her films with Gable that created her lastinglegacy in the  film world. Unfortunately, during the filming of Saratoga (1937), she was hospitalized with uremic poisoning. On June 7, 1937, she died from the ailment. She was only 26. did you know that Jean Harlow...... refused the lead in King Kong (1933) as well as thelead in the Tod Browning classic Freaks (1932) was the idol of Marilyn Monroe, who backed out of abiographical film picture on her life. Both Harlow and Monroe co-starred in their last films with Clark Gable, Harlow in Saratoga (1937) and Monroe in The Misfits (1961)along with Hedy Lamarr, they were the primary inspirations for Batman creator Bob Kane's Catwoman character of her final performance in Saratoga (1937), critic Graham Greene wrote "Her technique was the gangster'stechnique - she toted a breast like a man totes a gun" following the end of her third marriage she met actor William Powell--they were together for two years, but Jean became ill and diedbefore Powell proposed marriage the premiere of her first feature film, Hell's Angels (1930), on May 27, 1930, drew an estimated crowd of 50,000 at Grauman's Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Blvd--the filmalso has an expensive eight-minute two-color Technicolor sequence - the only color footage of Harlow that exists is ranked #22 on the American Film Institute's "100 Years, 100 Legends" list in June 1999  was the very first film actress to grace the cover of Life magazine in May 1937 ~terms of sale--> seller can cancel any bid and/or end auction at any time--> winning bidder can collect photograph in Marina del Rey, CA, or pays USPS express mail  with full insurance required--> payment by PayPal or bank wire transfer within 3 days of invoice--> item sold as is - sales are final, understanding that......--> authenticity and condition are guaranteed  please notealso shown are images of  lobby cards and other photographs that we are also currently listing* a Freulich stamp not to be confused with that of Jack's brother Roman Freulich who was aa still photographer at Universal and shot more well-known glamorous faces thnan Jack[thanks to DSS for pointing out this distinction] thanks for lookingplease check our other auctions by clicking the Ebay icon below              wm          product ltd would be pleased to discuss the possibilityof selling items of value on Ebay that you own and are ready to part with - please email us at prodltd@aol.comfor more information    -     thanks       -     SquareTrade © AP6.0
