This is just a common misconception. Like many other dedicated Indy fans, I should know - I've watched the movie more times than I can remember ;-) As Indy says in his Journal and drawing : "Here's my rendering of the real deal - the Holy Grail, a simple ceramic goblet - the cup of a carpenter" (See pictures). "The cup of a carpenter" simply means the cup of a humble man, not that it's made of wood. "...the true Grail : a simple clay cup for the son of a humble carpenter" - (LFA book). In the movie, as he chooses the simple clay Grail, Indy merely says "That's the cup of a carpenter". .... and it's why Donovan chose poorly, because he was misled !   ..... don't be misled too !  Indiana Jones fans know that in the region of 20 Grail prop cups were produced for the movie, and no 2 were absolutely identical in either decoration or dimensions. Around 12 were made of plastic resin (for the "rough" scenes), but the most beautiful, were made of ceramic / clay. No Holy Grail prop was made of wood. It is known that the hero props were made of clay, hand-spun on a wheel, and leafed. This can be confirmed by the foremost Indiana Jones experts at Club Obi Wan. Please email me if you wish a direct web-page link to one of the world's most prominent Indiana Jones experts also confirming this. Attempts to convince you that there is only one kind of prop patina with only slight variations, are sadly misguided. Some of the radically different patinas can be seen in the description images in my listings based on actual "A" class props. These images are freely available on the internet, and at various Indiana Jones fan club web-sites. Terracotta clay, not wood, was the chosen medium used by the Phoenicians, Romans, Greeks, Carthaginians, Galileans etc for amphorae, containers, drinking cups and so forth, due to its ability to keep liquids cool in the fierce heat of these regions. The Holy Grail has leafing on, and inside it.  Due to its organic nature, it is extremely unwise and impractical to stick leafing on a wooden item that is handled often, let alone it lasting for centuries stuck on. Imitation Holy Grails made of wood are painted, not leafed. If you want the REAL "real deal" prop replica of the movie's Holy Grail, then your quest is over .... THIS is it !  -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   About this reproduction itself   It is made out of 100% fine Mediterranean Terracotta imported from Italy (not river or synthetic clay), the same type that has been used for Millennia in the regions of Southern Europe, North Africa & the Middle-East. Shiny leafing on the inside (not paint), & the outer decorative leafing (not paint) is aged, as it should be. This Grail cup is made in the traditional way, hand-spun on a wheel and left to dry naturally for approximately 6 days. Only the best top quality clay will allow this without cracking during the drying time. It is thereafter baked to harden and cool over a further 2-day period. It is then individually decorated as seen in the images to represent the Grail as seen in the movie, and the simulation of a 2000-year-old artefact with calcified dust encrustations, which takes 3 full days to complete. For final protection, it is hand-coated with 2 layers of 2 different specialised lacquers, on both the inside & outside. No airbrushes are used. It is therefore unique.  What you see, is exactly the one you will get.  The Grail is roughly 15 cms high, & 11 cms top basin diameter. Normal handling will not effect the Grail's patina, but it is not to be dropped, rolled and bounce into a chasm ! The Grails in image number 4, are of course not for sale in this auction !
